Five people were injured in a deadly wreck in Penwell on Wednesday morning and were rushed to Medical Center Hospital. The wreck involved a transport bus for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Interstate 20 near FM 866 around 7:30 a.m.
According to DPS Troopers, the transport van lost control, went into the center median through a guardrail and into an embankment. Then the van ran into a train that was traveling eastbound.
Eight prisoners and two correctional officers were killed in the tragedy.
According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration‘s bus crash statistics, in 2009 alone, 254 people were killed in bus crashes and another 20,000 were injured.
