When we select winners for our Facebook giveaways, we aim to be as fair and neutral as possible. By publishing this page on our process of how we select the winners, we also aim to be transparent.
The first step in determining how we select our winners depends on the rules of the contest. In some of our contest posts, we require the participants to like our page, share the post, or comment on the post. If, for example, the requirement is comment on the post, when it’s time to select the winner(s), we’ll load every single comment publicly available to us and paste them into an Excel spreadsheet. Then we use the randbetween formula to generate random numbers between 1 and the number of commenters in the sheet. That random number that was generated corresponds to a single winner.
The process is the same if the requirement was sharing the post. We are able to download a list of people who have publicly shared the post. We load it into a spreadsheet and use a random number generator to select a winner.
For either method, if multiple winners are to be selected, we generate more than one random number, and those random numbers correspond to all of the winners.
