Fatal Industrial Accident – Upton County

A fatal Industrial accident in Upton County  on an Apache Corporation lease, occurred on County Road 117, on Sunday on a Sidewinder Drilling rig. The drilling company is Sidewinder Drilling, based in Houston. Officials from Midland and Upton County responded to the accident and OSHA will be doing an investigation of the accident. The name of the person who was killed has not yet been released. The Upton County sheriffs department is still trying to get a hold of the family.

No one else was injured in the accident, which happened on the drilling rig floor. Officials say that it was an equipment-related accident and the worker was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the United States Department of Labor, 450,000 were employed in the oil and gas industry in 2011 alone and from 2003-2010, 823 oil and gas extraction workers were killed on the job. This statistic is more than seven times greater than all the other US industries combined.
