A California judge has ruled that California can legally force Monsanto to put labels on its Roundup products that warn people of the cancer risks associated with exposure to the chemical. Monsanto is the largest agricultural chemical company in the world and invented glyphosate, the active chemical in Roundup weed killer. In 2015, a World Health Organization report linked the Roundup exposure to developing cancer later on in life, saying that the chemical is “probably a carcinogenic” to humans.
This California court ruling is the latest in a number of legal battles Monsanto finds itself in the middle of, many related to Roundup. Currently, there are numerous lawsuits filed around the country against Monsanto by people who have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The plaintiffs in those cases claim that glyphosate exposure caused the cancer, and Monsanto failed to warn of the risks.
