13-year-old struck in pedestrian wreck

According to the Texas DPS has confirmed that a 13-year-old child was struck and killed in a pedestrian wreck at CR 2130 and 7650, just south of Woodrow Road on Monday night.

DPS representatives say a family was walking north in the northbound lane. A red GMC pickup was headed north focused on another vehicle and never saw the family.

The pickup struck all three pedestrians, a 13-year-old female was pronounced dead at the scene and a 15-year-old female and an adult were taken to UMC.

No charges have been filed and there is no indication of drugs or alcohol being involved as of Monday night.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

-In 2011, an estimated 69,000 pedestrians were injured, 11,000 of those injured were age 14 and younger, and males accounted for 65% (7,000) of those 11,000 injured.

4,280 pedestrians died in traffic crashes in 2010, a 4% increase from the number reported in 2009.

-Pedestrians were one of the few groups of road users to experience an increase in fatalities in the United States in 2011, totaling 4,432 deaths.
