Ask the Lawyer | What do you mean by “free consultation”?

Question:

What do lawyers mean when they say “consultations are free”?

Answer:

When we say “free,” we mean literally it’s free. You don’t pay anything for a consultation.

People come in or call, and they can ask us questions. We let them know whether we think there is a case or whether there are issues with their case, and we never charge them for that consultation.

If they decide to hire us, then they pay us at the end of the case. But no one ever has to take money out of their pocket to pay us.
