Hobbs Industrial Accident Takes one Life

A Hobbs man is dead after an industrial accident in Artesia in the 700 block of West Kincaid Ranch Road around 9 a.m. on Wednesday. According to officials, Diversified Oil Services employed the crew that was in the pit. While the workers were cutting a pipeline and disassembling PVC pipe to be capped, an explosion occurred, pinning one of the three men with a pipe and releasing H2S gas.

The other three men that were working in the pit were able to escape, but 21-year-old Fabian Martinez was unable to get out and the gas is believed to be the cause of his death.

According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, 4,628 workers were killed on the job in 2012 on average, 89 a week or more than 12 deaths every day.Out of 4,175 worker fatalities in private industry in calendar year 2012, 806 or 19.3% were in construction. The leading causes of worker deaths on construction sites were falls, followed by struck by object, electrocution, and caught-in/between. These “Fatal Four” were responsible for more than half (54.2%).
