A fatal I-10 accident took one life on Saturday morning around 2:45 a.m. 50-year-old Oscar Ceballos was driving a Yamaha motorcycle west on Interstate 10 near Raynolds when he collided with an unoccupied marked police vehicle. The police car had its overhead lights on and was being used to close lanes on Interstate 10 and divert traffic, because of an unrelated traffic accident.
Ceballos was thrown from his motorcycle and landed in the far right lane. As a uniformed police officer approached Ceballos, the driver of a Chevrolet Impala, Jaime Lopez, allegedly hit the same patrol vehicle and then traveled into the far right lane and struck Ceballos.
Ceballos was pronounced dead at the scene. Lopez was taken to a local hospital for treatment of injuries and was later arrested. According to official investigators, speed, alcohol, and driver inattention were factors in the collision.
Police say that they responded to 11 different DWI-related incidents on Saturday. The above fatality was the 35th traffic fatality this year.
