Odessa school bus wreck caused by not adhering to stop sign

A work truck driver ignored a stop sign and by doing so, caused the wreck with a school bus, which was full of Odessa High School and Crockett Junior High students.

One student has been airlifted to a Lubbock hospital after the school bus crash Tuesday morning and is now recovering. That student along with the driver of the school bus, the driver of the other vehicle involved, and three other students were taken to the hospital. Other students were taken to an Odessa hospital by their parents later on. Thankfully there has been no life threatening injuries to any of the people involved with the accident.

According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration:

  • A total of 13,627 vehicles were involved in fatal crashes at stop signs from 1999-2000

21% failed to obey the sign

23% failed to yield the right-of-way

  • Fatal crashes associated with failure to obey signs were 1.5 times higher at stop signs than at traffic signals.
