One dead, 7 injured in Rio Arriba head-on

One person was killed and 7 others were injured in a three-car head-on collision on NM 68 between the Dixon Turnoff and Embudo, on Monday afternoon.

The driver of one of the vehicles was killed and the other two drivers, along with two other adult passengers and three children passengers, all received serious injuries. Some were hospitalized at Espanola and others were taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, according to officials.

Officials said that around 4:30 p.m. the wreck occurred when the driver of a southbound car veered over the centerlines and hit a northbound vehicle head-on. A second northbound vehicle then crashed into the first mentioned vehicles.

Common causes of head-on collisions include:  

  • Going the wrong way on the road which is often called a “wrong-way” crash

  • Crossing the center line and crashing into an oncoming vehicle

  • Passing on a two lane road as another vehicle is approaching
