One killed, several others injured in three-motorcycle wreck

The El Paso Police Department is investigating a three-motorcycle wreck. One person was killed and several others were injured on Paisano Drive and San Francisco Street at 6:08 p.m. on Sunday.

According to officials with the El Paso police, one person has died and four other people are injured. Benjamin Chavarria, 40-years-old, died at the scene and his passenger, Elizabeth Guerra, 41-years-old, was injured. The  driver of the 2003 Harley Davidson, Steven Manzanares, suffered from non-life threatening, but Devona Murillo was seriously hurt. The driver of the third motorcycle, Benji Barrientos also suffered life-threatening injuries.

The Special Traffic Investigators Team arrived in the scene around 9 p.m. on Sunday to begin investigating. All the riders were ejected during the crash and only one person was wearing a helmet. Investigators at this point do not know if alcohol was a factor as well.

According to the Center of Disease Control:  

  • Motorcyclist death rates increased 55% from 2001 to 2008 (1.12 per 100,000 persons in 2001 to 1.74 per 100,000 persons in 2008)

  • Between 2001 and 2008, more than 34,000 motorcyclists were killed and an estimated 1,222,000 persons were treated in a U.S. emergency department (ED) for a non-fatal motorcycle-related injury

  • The highest death and injury rates were among 20-24 year-olds, followed by 25-29 year-olds
