One Person in Critical Condition after Motorcycle Rollover in El Paso

An El Paso motorcycle rollover accident occurred in east El Paso. The wreck occurred around 11 p.m. on Thursday right near the Spur 601 exit. The driver of the motorcycle was headed northbound on Loop 375 when they lost control of the motorcycle and landed on the outside shoulder of the highway, leaving one of the victims in critical condition.

Officials say that one man and one woman were on the bike at the time the accident occurred. One of the riders was taken to University Medical Center and the other was taken to Del Sol Medical Center.

The speed limit in the area was 65 mph, but the police do not believe that speed was a factor in the crash.

In the past ten years, according to the United States Department of Transportation, motorcycle registration in the United States has gone up from 3,826,373 in 1997 to 6,678,958 in 2006. That’s a 75 percent increase overall.

Also, from 1997 to 2007 the annual number of motorcycle fatalities increased from 2,116 to 5,154. There has also been an increase in the estimated number of motorcycle injuries increased from 53,000 to 103,000 (94 percent increase).
