Pedestrian hit by Hale Center police car

Jose Sanchez Sepeda, 76-years-old, is now in stable condition at University Medical Center after being struck by a Hale Center police car on Saturday.

According to police officials, Sepeda was attempting to walk across Main Street in the middle of the intersection. There was no cross walk and he was not crossing at a corner or at a traffic light.

The Hale Center police car was traveling southbound on Main, driven by Officer Matthew Cowley. The Officer was not injured.

The crash is till under investigation. No charges have been issued.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrians were one of the few groups of road users to experience an increase in fatalities in the United States in 2011, totaling 4,432 deaths.
