Phuong Thi Hoang, 66 of Houston, Texas, was killed on the evening of Thursday, November 1, 2018, when his car collided with the trailer of an 18 wheeler. The 18-wheeler was driven by Dwight Alvin Buril, 59 of Universal City, Texas.
The crash happened in Lea County, New Mexico on Highway 62 about seven miles west of Hobbs. Buril was traveling on Maddox road, and after stopping at the stop sign at Highway 62, he proceeded to turn east onto Highway 62. Buril didn’t realize that the highway was a divided highway and accidentally turned eastbound in the westbound passing lane. After realizing his mistake, he attempted to back to correct the error and head eastbound in the correct lane. While backing up, the 18-wheeler’s trailer was perpendicular tot eh westbound lanes of traffic on Highway 62.
Hoang was travelling westbound on Highway 62, did not see the trailer in the road, and collided with the trailer. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Office of the Medical Investigator. Buril was cited for Careless Driving.
